Welcome to the Dorset Equality Group. Share our passion for confronting and tackling inequality.

What’s the problem?

Inequality – in wealth, income or access to basic services - is harmful. The quality of our lives - from life expectancy to mental illness, from violence to illiteracy – is affected not only by how wealthy a society is but also by how equal it is.

Societies with a big gap between rich and poor are bad for everyone, including the well-off.

It doesn’t have to be like this.

Who are we?

We are a group of Dorset-based people who work to raise awareness of inequality, to promote social justice, and to campaign for greater equality. We are politically non-aligned.

What do we do?

We campaign, especially by engaging policy-makers.
We publicise the inequalities around us and the damage they cause.
We make presentations, drawing on local case studies.

Will you join us on our journey towards equality?

Affiliation

Dorset Equality Group is affiliated to the (national) Equality Trust and draws on many Equality Trust resources for campaigning and engagement with policy makers.

Income, wealth, security and opportunity are shared unequally.

Did you know that?…………

across the world:
26 individuals own as much as the poorest 3.8 billion

in the UK:
for the worst-off 10% income after tax and benefits averages under £10,000

parts of Dorset have:

  • neighbourhoods among the 10% most deprived in England
  • average house prices over 10 times average earnings
  • over 25% of children living in poverty
  • no easily accessible public transport

It doesn’t have to be like this.
For a fairer, healthier, happier society
We ALL need greater equality.
