About the Dorset Equality Group

 A little bit of background

  • Inaugurated in September 2016 at a public event at Poole Hospital, addressed by Professor Kate Pickett

  • Held screenings of The Divide – 78 minute film based on The Spirit Level – in Wimborne (July 2016); Bournemouth University Festival of Learning (July 2017); Shire Hall Museum, Dorchester (October 2018); Rex Cinema, Wareham as part of Purbeck Film Festival (October 2019)

  • Held screenings of Demain (Transition Towns film covering environment, economics, energy, education and politics), and especially linking ecological sustainability to economic justice in Poole (November 2017) and in east Dorset schools (autumn 2018)

  • Engagement with Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (August 2017 and ongoing)

  • Asked Equality Trust Fairness Fifteen questions at full council meeting of Bournemouth & Poole Boroughs and Dorset County Council (summer 2018), conversations ongoing

  • Instrumental in the formation of ALL (Alliance for Local Living) fielding non-partisan candidates in elections for new unitary authority for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole in May 2019

  • Challenging health and transport inequalities in east Dorset (summer 2017 and ongoing)

  • Developing links with WeyPAW (Weymouth and Portland Action on Wages) - (autumn 2018 and ongoing)

  • Made submission to BCP (Bournemouth Christchurch Poole) Council to encourage more equitable allocation across the unitary authority of funds raised through residential and commercial development
  • Urged Dorset Council during COVID 19 emergency to provide necessary support to school and college students without computer and connection facilities at home

  • Invitations to engage with any Dorset-based community, social, political or faith group - we can hold film screenings, engage in debates and educational events, or make interactive presentations tailored to local needs and interests

  • Offers to spread the word about the damage inequality does and the benefits of challenging it

How Dorset Equality Group operates

The group holds business/planning meetings every few weeks, open to anyone interested. Currently these meetings are held in Poole. We would welcome offers of venues across the county. Please email dorsetequalitygroup@gmail.com for details of next meeting (virtual meetings during COVID 19 pandemic).
